Amateur Radio is a radio communication service for the purpose of self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigation carried out by amateurs—duly authorized persons interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest.
It has long been recognized as one of the important elements in creating interest among students to take up careers in electronics and telecommunications.
Amateur Radio emerged in 1908 and received formal international recognition in 1927 at the International Radiograph Convention in Washington DC. It operates under a general mandate that has remained largely unchanged since that time.
The Radio Society of Kenya falls under the regulatory body, the Communications Authority of Kenya. World-wide, radio amateurs are licensed by their respective government administrations, and each licensee becomes a registered and identified user of radio communication equipment.
Amateurs are often applauded by their governments for their ability to effectively monitor and regulate their own activities and to avoid interference with other radio services. This is a reputation that is well deserved and one in which all amateurs take pride.
